Donny & Marie Help Fox Unveil 2011-12 Theater Lineup
Detroit News

Donnie and Marie Osmond were on hand Tuesday morning to announce the Fox Theatre's 2011-12 theater series.

The brother and sister duo plan to bring their production "Donny & Marie — Christmas in Detroit" to the Fox Nov. 29 to Dec. 4. Among the performances, the show, which will include a nine-piece band and eight dancers, will feature Donny Osmond's hit "Yo-Yo," an Osmond rendition of Aerosmith's "Walk This Way" and Marie Osmond singing a variety of operatic selections.

For its fall and winter lineup, the Fox unveiled eight other performances, including "My Fair Lady" (Oct. 22 and 23) and the return of Irving Berlin's "White Christmas" (Nov. 8-13), Cirque Dreams Holidaze (Dec. 13-18) and Rodgers & Hammerstein's "South Pacific" (March 2-4).

While talking about "Christmas in Detroit," Donny Osmond, who was the season nine winner of ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," took the time to share a Detroit-related moment.

After the Brit Awards in London, where Osmond says he presented Madonna with the Best International Female award, he met rapper Eminem after the show.

Osmond says the two hugged and "Eminem said, 'I used to watch "The Donny and Marie Show." You influenced me as an artist.' "

"Dancing with the Stars" renewed fans' interest in both Donny and Marie Osmond's careers.

"I didn't expect to stay on as long as I did," says Marie Osmond, who danced on season five of the reality show. "I was on this show during a time in my life where I was getting divorced, my son was in rehab and my father died."

But she says the show gave her the endurance to keep going, especially when she was receiving thousands of emails from supportive fans. One email, Osmond recalled, was from a 23-year-old girl who was stressed with school finals.

"She wrote me explaining how I was an inspiration to her and if I wasn't going to quit, she wasn't either," says Osmond. "Talk about pressure."
