Sunday
Donny announced his engagement to 19 year old BYU freshman, Debra Glenn in Honolulu, Hawaii.  The article stated Donny met Debbie in 1975 when she was dating Jay.  After awhile, Donny asked Jay if he could ask her for a date and Jay agreed.  Donny had seriously been dating Debbie since last fall when the family moved from Hollywood to Orem.  Debra is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Avery Glenn of Provo.  Ron Clark stated that Debra sings and plays the flute, but the Osmonds have no plans to include her on the show.  Ron Clark stated, “we think it will widen Donny’s following.  It will move him out of pop rock and develop a following of adults.”

April 23, 1978
Sunday
(Note:  This article actually appeared in the Salt Lake Tribune on Monday, February 2, 1998; however, due to the subject matter and to keep things chronological, it is here.  Alf Pratte was writing the article explaining why he was afraid to see Donny in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.)  Alf Pratte helped coordinate a fireside in Hawaii while the Osmonds were filming Goin’ Coconuts.  As part of the job, he invited the local press to attend the Sunday meeting to see the family members speak and sing at the Tabernacle.  Unbeknownst to Pratte, Ron Clark had invited a larger global press to an even more important event.  Donny was going to announce his engagement to Debra Glenn on the grounds of the Laie Hawaii LDS Temple – 40 miles away the day after the fireside.  Unfortunately, Pratt and Clark did not know each other’s itinerary, and neither the Hawaii news media nor the paparazzi from around the world knew the difference between the Sunday fireside and the Monday announcement.  Because of the misunderstanding, about 30 uninvited reporters and paparazzi from around the world appeared at the Tabernacle grounds thinking that the Sunday fireside which Pratte had invited local press was the place where the engagement announcement was to be made.  “Who invited the press?” asked an angry Donny as he was trying to shield Debbie’s face from the angry and shouting reporters.  Pratte meekly admitted he had invited some of the press while he was trying to figure out why Donny was keeping Debbie’s identity hidden behind his arms.  The prophet did not seem pleased – neither did the Osmonds.  The Osmond family was under siege for the next 15 minutes as they tried to freshen up and practice their parts for the fireside.  Outside the visitor’s center, the angry reporters and photographers banged on the door and made threatening remarks.  One of the offered $1000.00 for a photo of Debbie.  Finally, the Osmonds told Pratte that unless he got rid of the press, they were not going to perform.  The paparazzi reminded Pratte that he had invited them to the fireside.  Their counter proposal was to let them get at least one photo of Debbie.  Donny was reluctant to give into the paparazzi and break the news of the engagement early, but he and Debbie agreed.  The paparazzi took their pictures and left.  After the fireside started, Pratte saw Donny smile for the first time.  He was clutching Debbie closely.  She must have been wondering if she wanted to go through with the engagement, let alone a marriage that would make her part of a mob scene.

Donny married Debra Glenn in the LDS Salt Lake Temple in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Donny and Debra exchanged nuptial vows in a ceremony performed by Elder Paul H. Dunn.  According to a family spokesman, they were pronounced man and wife at exactly 8:08 am.  The marriage ceremony was restricted to about 40 family members and friends.  The bride wore a white full-length gown with a high necked lace front and long veil.  After the ceremony, the couple posed for pictures in front of the SLC LDS Temple while hundreds of fans stood outside the gates to watch the picture taking.  The crowd starting gathering around 6:00 am and included reporters and photographers from LA and Eastern Magazines.  After the picture taking session around the Temple, the Osmonds conducted another picture and interview session on the LDS Office Building Plaza.  The new Mrs. Osmond appeared shy and slightly overwhelmed by the crush of persons who pushed and shoved to get a closer look at her.  Ron Clark stated the couple originally planned to marry in June, but they decided last week to move the date to today.  The Osmonds are to leave later this afternoon for Las Vegas where they will open a 3-week performance engagement on Tuesday night at the Hilton Hotel.  Donny wanted to be able to take Debbie with him as his wife.  “When you love someone, why wait” stated Donny with his arm encircling Debra’s waist.  Debra stated she would no longer be a full-time student at BYU, but rather stay home and be a wife and raise a family.  A wedding breakfast was held after the interview session.  A reception was planned for Tuesday night at the Las Vegas Hilton.  A second reception would probably be held sometime in June.
